How a used car auction works

Frequently Asked Questions About A Public Auto Auction

What is a public used car auction?
A public used car auction is where dealers and consumers bid on cars for sale. It is an opportunity for the consumer to buy like a dealer does in the auction line.  Satisfied customers have purchased vehicles at deep discounts as compared to retail prices.

How can I donate a used car? Donating a used car is simple at H Greg Auto Auction sells thousands of vehicles each year for the benefit of local and national charities.  If you would like to donate your vehicle to one of our local charities.   Transportation of your vehicle to the auction is free if it is local, and your donation is tax deductible.

What is the minimum bid for donated cars?  Donated cars are sold to the highest bidder, regardless of price!! That's right, if you are the high bidder at $50.00 then the car is yours!!

Preview of auction inventory

You may preview any vehicle at anytime. Test drives are welcome, except on auction day.

Make sure you make an educated decision on the car you are purchasing.  Remember that when you bid on a car you are making a commitment to purchase it and backing out of the deal is not an alternative. If you are unsure about the car you are buying, feel free to bring someone who knows cars with you.

Bidding

First, you will need to leave a $300 deposit in order to get a bidder number.  You are welcome to put it on a credit card and of course if you do not purchase a car, you will not be charged.

This is the when the organized chaos begins.  Each car drives past the auctioneer and bids will be cast at that time.  The auctioneer will say the run number and announce important information. This is the time you may bid.

It may be confusing at times, but you can always look at the TV screen behind the auctioneer to see clearly the price and the car details.

The auctioneer will start the bidding, the Ringman is the person who stands in the auction lane and recognizes when you raise your hand to bid and he will signal the auctioneer.  Multiple bids will raise the price of the car in increments.  When there are no more bids, the auctioneer will say, “Going once, going twice, sold to bidder number 32!  At that time, the clerk will record that bidder number and the back-up bidder number.  At this time the vehicle is yours and you must present payment. Either pay at the cashier or sign with the finance manager for your new payment schedule.  If for some reason the first bidder is unable to meet his commitment, the back-up bidder will be able to purchase the car.

What is the 4 color rating system?

GREEN LIGHT: The seller whether privately owned or dealer owned indicates that the vehicle's motor and transmission are in good working order and that seller honors the condition of the car.   After delivery of your vehicle, H Greg Auto Auction will provide a 1 hour arbitration period for engine and transmission issues.  If something appears wrong with the car you will need to say so right within that hour time frame.  Once the car leaves the H Greg Facility, you may not dispute it.  Full refunds will be issued for valid arbitration claims.

RED LIGHT: Vehicle is being sold as-is.  No warranty or guarantee on the vehicle.  No refunds will be issued for any defects and that the vehicle cannot be arbitrated or disputed for any reason.

YELLOW LIGHT: Yellow Light indicates that there is something wrong somewhere with the vehicle. The seller is letting you know upfront if something is not in working order and you may not return the car for that particular item not working.

BLUE LIGHT:  Means that the title is not presently in our facility but as soon as it becomes available we will transfer the title to the appropriate buyer.

Payment

When you are finished bidding for the day, you will need to show your bidder number to the cashier and either pay for your vehicle or get your deposit back depending if you are the winning bid or not.. You may pay with Visa, MasterCard, Cash, or certified funds. The $300 deposit will be applied to your purchase at the time of your successful high bid. The balance is due by 10AM Monday morning.  If no purchase was made, you will be immediately refunded.
